Crisis Intervention/Negotiation with the Elderly, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and LGBTQ Communities

This course is hosted by the Puyallup Police Department.

The elder population is among the highest risk for suicide and murder-suicide in the United States. This presentation will address factors impacting the risk of suicide and murder-suicide as well as useful technique for intervention. The deaf and hard-of-hearing in crisis present unique challenges for law enforcement. This presentation  will provide a cultural awareness, tips for understanding the crisis, and specific techniques intervention and protecting the rights of the deaf and hard of hearing in crisis. Basic cultural awareness helps law enforcement respond to the LGTBQ community in crisis. This presentation includes a primer on terminology, sensitive interaction, and techniques for crisis intervention. A panel is planned for this presentation – however is subject to the availability of panel members.
